Abstract

Early marriage is still common in many areas, including Soko District, Tuban Regency. This situation raises various issues related to the psychological readiness of couples to live married life. This study aims to examine the psychological impact of early marriage on the formation of a happy, lasting, and eternal family, and analyze the role of Law Number 1 of 1974, as amended by Law Number 16 of 2019, in controlling this practice. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with data collection techniques including interviews, observation, and documentation. The research informants consisted of couples who married at a young age, their parents, officials from the Soko District Religious Affairs Office, and the Tuban Religious Court. The results show that early marriage causes various psychological consequences, such as emotional instability, communication difficulties, economic pressure, and obstacles in adjusting to life as a married couple. Couples who are less emotionally mature tend to be more vulnerable to marital conflict than couples who are more psychologically prepared. Furthermore, Law No. 1 of 1974, as amended by Law No. 16 of 2019, plays a crucial role in controlling the practice of child marriage through the minimum age for marriage and marriage dispensation mechanisms. However, cultural and social factors remain the primary causes of early marriage. Therefore, it is necessary to increase legal awareness and improve the mental preparedness of prospective couples before marriage.
