No Pads, No Helmets...Just Balls (2002).

Abstract— Song lyrics are a valuable medium for examining figurative language, but comprehensive thematic comparisons of pop-punk albums are still lacking in linguistic research. This research intends to recognize, categorize, and analyze the kinds and themes of figurative language present throughout the songs of Simple Plan’s first album, No Pads, No Helmets...Just Balls (2002). A qualitative descriptive approach was utilized, employing Qualitative Content Analysis (QCA) and thematic analysis as the main analytical methods. Data was gathered by thoroughly reviewing all eleven lyrics from the album, which were then coded and classified according to recognized typologies of figurative language such as metaphor, simile, hyperbole, personification, and irony. The results indicate that hyperbole and metaphor are the most prevalent figurative tools, mainly illustrating themes of teenage frustration, emotional openness, and challenged relationships. A comparative examination of the tracks also demonstrates consistent themes, with slight tonal variations between songs reflecting different emotional levels. This study concludes that Simple Plan uses figurative language not just for stylistic purposes but as a purposeful tool to express the emotional realities of young people.
