Abstract

This descriptive-interpretative qualitative study aims to elaborate on the philosophical meanings of the "Putri Klenting Dolanan Banyu" theatrical performance and analyze its role as a medium for socializing civic values among the youth in Rengel Village, Tuban Regency. Data were gathered purposively from village officials, cultural figures, artists, and youth through observation, interviews, and documentation, then analyzed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña. The results show that the festival involves an inclusive community ecosystem dominated by the younger generation aged 15–24 (57%). Philosophically, the performance reflects the Javanese philosophy of "Memayu Hayuning Bawana"; the water symbol signifies ecological harmony with the Goa Ngerong spring, while the character of Putri Klenting personifies integrity, patience, and responsibility. In the civic dimension, this tradition effectively internalizes the values of mutual cooperation, responsibility, and social care through an experiential learning approach via youth's direct involvement in the festival production. This study concludes that optimizing local wisdom successfully establishes an adaptive community-based civic education model to strengthen youth's civic character.
