Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to describe the profile of field dependent (FD) and field independent (FI) cognitive style abilities in junior high school students through a qualitative approach that emphasizes in-depth interpretation of the results of the Group Embedded Figures Test (GEFT). FD and FI cognitive styles are dimensions of educational psychology that influence students' information processing and problem solving. Data were collected from 32 students of class VIII B at SMPN 1 Bojonegoro. The GEFT test results showed a dominance of the FD category, namely 22 students, while the FI category was dominated by 10 students. Respondents were selected purposively from their cognitive styles for in-depth interviews based on communication skills and willingness to participate. From each FD and FI group, 2 students were selected with the same answers, then to ensure data validity, source and method triangulation was carried out. Students in the FD category have the characteristics of thinking globally, being easily influenced, liking collaborative learning, and needing extrinsic motivation. Students in the FI category tend to be more analytical, focusing on important
elements, independent, and obtaining motivation from within themselves.
